Pimp My Clip – 6 Ways to Take Your Music Video to the Next Level

A music video today is about much more than a well-recorded song accompanied by attractive shots. In the age of TikTok, Reels, and YouTube, viewers expect something that grabs their attention within the first few seconds. The good news? You don’t need a huge budget to create impressive and unconventional shots.

Sometimes, all it takes is one clever trick that completely changes the way a story is told. We’ve put together a set of six tools that can literally pimp your music video.

1. BodyCam / SnorriCam – Get Inside the Character’s Head

There are shots everyone has seen, but not everyone knows how they were made. The character walks through the city, the crowd moves around them, the world spins, while their face remains perfectly still in the center of the frame. The effect is slightly surreal, somewhat hypnotic, and works particularly well when portraying emotions such as confusion, stress, or euphoria.

This is exactly what a BodyCam, also known as a SnorriCam, is designed for. It is a special harness worn by the actor, with a camera attached and pointed directly at the character’s face. The camera moves together with the actor, keeping the character stable while the entire surroundings appear to spin around them.

Importantly, our setup is ready to use as soon as you put it on. There is no need to build your own rig or come up with complicated mounting solutions. Simply attach the camera and start recording.

2. HelmetRig – Show the World Through the Character’s Eyes

The first-person perspective, commonly known as POV (Point of View), has experienced a real renaissance over the past few years. The viewer literally sees the world through the character’s eyes, creating an even stronger connection with the story.

HelmetRig is a special helmet that allows a camera, camera body, or small filmmaking setup to be mounted securely. Thanks to multiple mounting points, you can attach an additional battery, a small LED light, or a video transmission system that allows the director to monitor the frame in real time.

It is a great solution not only for extreme sports. It works anywhere you want to show the world from the character’s perspective.

3. Kawalet – When the World Starts Spinning

Sometimes the simplest solutions produce the most spectacular results.

A Kawalet, or rotating table, allows an actor or vocalist to rotate around their own axis while the camera remains stationary. Thanks to smooth speed adjustment, you can achieve either subtle movement or dynamic rotations perfectly synchronized with the music.

The platform can hold not only products but also a person. That’s why this solution works particularly well for music productions.

4. 360 Platform – Camera in Motion, Character in the Center

If the character rotates on the Kawalet, here the situation is reversed.

The 360 Platform allows you to make a smooth camera rotation around a stationary object or person. Interestingly, the system requires neither power nor motors. It is quiet, mobile, and can be used both in the studio and outdoors.

The effect resembles shots made using much more advanced motion-control systems.

5. OverHead System ProAim – A Perspective That Always Grabs Attention

Some shots immediately catch the viewer’s eye. One of them is a perfectly symmetrical shot from above.

The OverHead System ProAim allows you to mount a camera directly above the scene and film straight down. Thanks to the system’s wide support span, you can also use wider lenses without worrying about parts of the system appearing in the frame.

It is most commonly used for tabletop shots, but creative filmmakers quickly discovered that it also works extremely well for music videos.

*Rent OverHead System at 150 PLN per day.

6. Sony DCR-TRV18E – When Your Music Video Needs a 90s Vibe

Not every effect has to be created in post-production. Sometimes the best way to achieve a unique visual character is to reach for equipment that was made more than a decade ago.

The Sony DCR-TRV18E is a MiniDV digital camcorder that can produce the distinctive retro look associated with the late 1990s and early 2000s. Characteristic colors, digital noise, limited resolution, and its specific image processing give the footage an authentic look rather than making it appear like modern footage artificially aged with a filter.

This is why MiniDV cameras have made a comeback and are increasingly appearing in professional music videos. Filmmakers use them to break away from the perfect, sterile look of modern cameras and give productions a more personal, raw character.

Interestingly, you don’t have to shoot the entire music video this way. Very often, MiniDV footage is used simply as an addition to the main material captured with a modern camera. A few seconds recorded on an “old camera” can give a production a unique atmosphere and make it look like a fragment of found archival footage.

It’s Not Just About the Equipment – The Idea Matters

The most memorable music videos are rarely created through special effects alone. Usually, they rely on simple but creatively used tools and a good idea for the production.

BodyCam lets you get inside the character’s head. HelmetRig shows the world through their eyes. The Kawalet rotates the artist. The 360 Platform rotates the camera. The OverHead System ProAim provides a unique overhead perspective.

Each of these solutions can become the central element of your next music video or simply one impressive shot that makes the viewer stop and watch for a little longer.

If you’re planning a music video and looking for unconventional solutions, take a look at our rental selection. Sometimes a single piece of unusual equipment can completely change the character of a production.
