Ultra-fast full-frame standard prime for low-light work

Introduced in March 2021, the Sony FE 50mm F1.2 GM is a premium G Master standard prime for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. Its 50 mm focal length gives a natural perspective for portraits, interviews, weddings, commercials, narrative work and low-light production. The exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture allows very shallow depth of field and strong subject separation while also helping keep ISO values lower in difficult lighting. On APS-C Sony bodies, the lens provides an angle of view equivalent to approximately 75 mm.

Four XD Linear Motors for fast and precise autofocus

Autofocus uses four XD Linear Motors driving two independently controlled floating focus groups. The system is designed for fast, accurate and quiet focusing while maintaining strong optical performance across the focusing range. Internal focusing keeps the lens length stable during focus changes, which helps balance on handheld rigs and gimbals. The lens does not include optical SteadyShot, so stabilization comes from a compatible camera body or external support. Focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch provide direct control.

G Master optical design with three XA elements

The optical construction uses 14 elements in 10 groups, including three XA elements designed to maintain high resolution while controlling aberrations and helping produce smooth bokeh. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and ghosting in difficult backlit scenes. An 11-blade circular aperture contributes to rounded out-of-focus highlights and refined background rendering, making the lens especially attractive for portraits and cinematic close-ups.

Close focusing, 72 mm filters and professional controls

The lens focuses down to 0.40 m and reaches a maximum magnification of 0.17x. The front accepts standard 72 mm filters, making it straightforward to use ND, diffusion or polarizing filters. A dedicated aperture ring can be switched between clicked and de-clicked operation for stills or smoother exposure adjustments in video. Dust- and moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine-coated front element support professional use. Despite the f/1.2 aperture, the lens weighs approximately 778 g and measures 108 mm in length.
