The iPhone 18 Pro Max [Video Set] is built for video creators who want to use a smartphone as a proper camera. Apple announced the new model on 9 September 2026, and it went on sale on 18 September. We supply the 512GB phone in a SmallRig cage with two rotatable side handles, so you get a secure grip, mounting points for a mic or an LED light, and a rig that is ready to shoot reels, behind-the-scenes, run-and-gun documentary or social content straight away.
Variable aperture on iPhone for the first time
The headline feature is the 48MP Fusion Main camera (24 mm) with a variable aperture. You can choose between four stops: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. A six-blade iris gives you real control over depth of field and exposure. Open up to f/1.48 in low light, or stop down to f/4 for group shots and product work where you need more in focus. It is backed by a 48MP Ultra Wide (13 mm) and a 48MP 4x tetraprism telephoto (100 mm). The Camera app now offers manual shutter speed, white balance and aperture, plus a histogram.
A professional video workflow
The phone records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps, including 25 and 100 fps for PAL workflows, and Full HD slow motion at up to 240 fps. For grading there is Apple Log 2, ACES support and ProRes RAW in compatible apps. You can record ProRes in 4K at up to 120 fps directly to an external SSD over USB-C (USB 3, up to 10Gb/s). For multicam shoots, genlock is supported with compatible third-party hardware and software. Audio is captured by four studio-quality mics with wind noise reduction.
What’s new compared with the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
- Variable f/1.48–4.0 aperture on the main camera (previously fixed) and a new sensor.
- A20 Pro chip on a 2 nm process, with a GPU up to 40% faster.
- A vapour chamber with three times the surface area and up to 40% better sustained performance, which matters for long, high-frame-rate takes.
- Up to 45 hours of video playback (eSIM model), up from 39 hours.
- Faster charging: 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter.
SmallRig cage and handles
The SmallRig 6901 cage weighs about 138 g and is made of aluminium alloy. It has an SR-MicroSlide rail around the frame, anti-twist 1/4″ threads and a HawkLock H11 quick-release interface. You can use special 67mm filter backplate to add an ND or a diffusion filter in seconds. The open back keeps the MagSafe area free, and all ports and buttons stay accessible. The two SmallRig 4403B handles attach tool-free via quick-release adapters. They rotate, and each has a cold shoe for a microphone or an LED light.
