The Sony FX5 is a compact full-frame Cinema Line camera that Sony announced on 22 July 2026, with sales starting in August. In a body only slightly larger than the FX3, you get features that until now were reserved for much bigger cameras: Open Gate recording and internal RAW. It is a great choice for commercials, music videos, short films, documentary and any production that needs a cinematic image in a small package. Our kit comes ready to shoot on set.
New sensor, Open Gate and internal RAW
The camera features a newly developed, fully stacked 16.6MP Exmor RS sensor and the BIONZ XR2 processor. Fast sensor readout noticeably reduces rolling shutter. For the first time in the FX series you can shoot Open Gate, a 3:2 image from the entire sensor area in 5K (4992 x 3328), which gives you framing freedom in post, for example for vertical and horizontal versions from a single take. Footage is recorded internally in 16-bit X-OCN RAW (LT, C1 and C2), the format known from the Sony Venice and Burano. You can shoot 5K up to 60 fps, 4K up to 120 fps and Full HD up to 240 fps.
Three base ISOs and 15+ stops of dynamic range
In S-Log3 the camera delivers over 15 stops of dynamic range. It has three base ISOs: ISO 800 for daylight and studio work, ISO 4000 for interiors and evenings, and ISO 12800 for very low light. Dual Gain mode combines two signal readouts for cleaner shadows and smoother tonal transitions. For fast turnaround without grading there is S-Cinetone, and for big-set workflows Cine EI mode with LUT loading. The camera also supports anamorphic desqueeze at 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x.
Stabilisation and handling
According to Sony, the 5-axis in-body stabilisation offers up to twice the roll correction range of the FX3, and Dynamic Active mode adds electronic support for handheld work. Gyro data is embedded in the file, so you can fine-tune stabilisation in post. The camera has a 3.5-inch 16:9 vari-angle screen, front and rear tally lamps, a cooling fan for long takes, two CFexpress Type A / SD slots, full-size HDMI with RAW output, two USB-C ports and a 2.5Gb/s LAN port.
A set-ready kit
The kit includes the XLR-H2 handle with two XLR/TRS inputs, recording up to 4 audio channels in 32-bit float at 96 kHz. The SmallRig 6776 HawkLock cage protects the body and offers NATO and Arca-Swiss quick-release mounts, 1/4″ and 3/8″ threads with ARRI locating holes, and cold shoes. Its top plate comes off so you can fit the XLR handle. You also get a 960GB CFexpress Type A card with a reader, three NP-SA100 batteries, a charger and a 45W USB-C power adapter.
