SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM Art [Canon EF Mount]

Released in 2016, the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is a full-frame portrait prime available in Canon EF mount. Its combination of an 85mm focal length and bright f/1.4 aperture makes it especially useful for portraits, interviews, beauty work, weddings, music videos and narrative close-ups where strong subject separation is important. The lens is designed around high resolving power, making it suitable for high-resolution stills as well as video productions that want a crisp subject with a smooth, controlled background.

F1.4 aperture, HSM autofocus and 0.85 m minimum focus

The lens focuses as close as 0.85 m and reaches a maximum magnification ratio of 1:8.5. Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor provides autofocus, while full-time manual override allows the focus ring to be used without first switching out of AF mode on compatible cameras. There is no optical image stabilization, so stabilization depends on the camera body, tripod, monopod, gimbal or other support system.

At approximately 1.13 kg, the lens is substantial for an 85mm photo prime. That weight is worth considering on compact handheld and gimbal builds, but it also reflects the large optical system required for f/1.4 performance and high-resolution rendering.

Art-series optical design and portrait rendering

Sigma uses 14 elements in 12 groups, including two SLD elements and one high-refractive-index element with anomalous partial dispersion. The design is intended to reduce axial chromatic aberration, sagittal coma flare and color fringing while maintaining strong resolution across the frame. A nine-blade rounded diaphragm supports smooth bokeh, and Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating helps control flare and ghosting in backlit scenes.

Compared with the earlier Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM, the Art version uses a much more complex optical formula and a newly designed HSM with approximately 1.3 times the torque. The Art lens is also significantly larger and heavier, prioritizing optical correction and resolving power over compactness.
