Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II

Announced in February 2026, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S II is a professional full-frame telephoto zoom for Nikon Z-mount cameras. It keeps the classic 70–200mm f/2.8 range but substantially updates the first-generation S-Line lens with a lighter internal-zoom design, faster SSVCM autofocus and improved stabilization. The result is a versatile lens for sports, events, portraits, interviews, documentary work and handheld or gimbal-based production where reach and fast subject acquisition matter.

Faster AF, internal zoom and close focusing

The lens uses Nikon’s Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor system with multi-focusing for fast, quiet and precise autofocus. Nikon states that AF is approximately 3.5 times faster than on the original Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, while AF tracking during zooming improves by around 40%. Internal zoom keeps the lens at a constant 208 mm length and limits shifts in the center of gravity, which is useful on monopods, shoulder rigs and gimbals.

Minimum focus distance is 0.38 m at 70 and 85mm, 0.50 m at 105mm, 0.60 m at 135mm and 0.80 m at 200mm. Maximum reproduction reaches 0.3x at 70mm, making the lens useful for close portrait details, products and inserts as well as conventional telephoto coverage.

Up to 6 stops of VR and 77mm filters

Built-in lens-shift VR provides up to 5.5 stops of stabilization, extending to 6.0 stops with compatible Nikon bodies using Synchro VR. This can make handheld telephoto work more practical and helps stabilize static or slowly moving shots when a tripod is not available. The constant f/2.8 aperture supports low-light shooting and consistent exposure throughout the zoom range.

The 77mm front thread accepts common ND, UV, diffusion and polarizing filters. Nikon reduced the weight to approximately 998 g without the tripod collar ring and protective cover—about 26% lighter than the previous generation. The optical design uses 18 elements in 16 groups with ED, Super ED, aspherical ED, fluorite and SR elements, while Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat help control flare and ghosting.
