Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S

Introduced in October 2021, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is a full-frame 5x standard-to-telephoto zoom for Nikon Z-mount cameras. Its 24–120mm range covers wide establishing shots, interviews, portraits, event coverage and compressed telephoto details without changing lenses, while the constant f/4 aperture keeps exposure consistent throughout the zoom. At approximately 630 g, it is relatively light for its range and works well on handheld builds, travel setups and medium-size gimbals.

24-120mm range, close focusing and quiet AF

The lens focuses as close as 0.35 m throughout the zoom range and reaches a maximum reproduction ratio of 0.39x at 120mm, making it useful not only for general coverage but also for close product details, food, hands and inserts. Nikon’s multi-focusing system uses two stepping motors for fast, precise and quiet autofocus, helping with interviews, documentary work and video setups where focus noise and abrupt transitions are undesirable.

For motion work, Nikon designed the lens to minimize focus breathing and focus shift during zooming. The zoom ring uses a short 80-degree rotation from wide to telephoto, so an operator can move quickly through the full 5x range without repositioning the hand. There is no optical VR built into the lens, so stabilization depends on the camera body, gimbal or support system.

77mm filters and S-Line optical performance

The 77mm front filter thread works with common ND, diffusion, UV and polarizing filters. The optical design uses 16 elements in 13 groups, including ED, aspherical ED and aspherical elements, while Nano Crystal Coat and ARNEO Coat reduce ghosting and flare in backlit scenes. A fluorine-coated front element helps with cleaning during location work, and the 9-blade rounded diaphragm supports smooth background rendering at longer focal lengths.

Our rental set includes the NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, a 77mm UV filter, front and rear caps and a protective lens pouch. Its combination of reach, moderate weight and constant aperture makes it a practical single-lens solution for crews that want to move quickly without carrying separate standard and short-telephoto zooms.
