Marketed in September 1989, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM is the first-generation professional 85mm f/1.2 portrait prime for Canon EF-mount full-frame cameras. Its combination of medium-telephoto perspective and an exceptionally bright f/1.2 aperture makes it especially suitable for portraits, fashion, interviews, music videos, weddings and low-light narrative work. The shallow depth of field available wide open can isolate a subject very strongly, while the 85mm focal length gives flattering perspective at typical portrait distances.
f/1.2 aperture, USM autofocus and 0.95 m close focus
The lens focuses as close as 0.95 m and reaches 0.11x maximum magnification. Canon uses a USM autofocus system with a front-group linear extension focusing design. The large focusing group and extremely bright optical system make accurate focus especially important at f/1.2, where the depth of field can become very narrow. There is no optical image stabilization, so stabilization depends on the camera body, tripod, monopod, gimbal or other support system.
At approximately 1,025 g, the lens is substantial for a short telephoto prime. Its weight and large front section are worth considering when building compact handheld or gimbal rigs, but the combination of speed, focal length and subject separation gives it a distinctive role that slower 85mm lenses cannot fully reproduce.
Classic first-generation L-series optics
The optical design uses 8 elements in 7 groups, including one aspherical element and two high-refraction elements. Canon also uses a floating system to help control aberrations across the focusing range. The eight-blade diaphragm and f/1.2 maximum aperture support smooth background rendering and strong separation between subject and environment.
Canon replaced this model with the EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM in 2006. The second generation retained the same basic 8-element, 7-group formula and 0.95 m minimum focus, but Canon introduced a high-speed CPU, revised AF control and updated coatings. Canon stated that autofocus was approximately 1.8 times faster than on the original version, making the first generation the more distinctly vintage option in handling and response.
