Marketed in January 2007, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a professional full-frame standard prime for Canon EF-mount cameras. Its defining feature is the very bright f/1.2 aperture, which gives crews strong low-light capability and unusually shallow depth of field at a natural 50mm perspective. That makes it especially useful for portraits, interviews, music videos, weddings, narrative close-ups and available-light scenes where subject separation matters more than maximum optical correction.
f/1.2 aperture, Ring USM and 0.45 m close focus
The lens focuses as close as 0.45 m and reaches 0.15x maximum magnification. Canon uses Ring-type USM together with a high-speed CPU and optimized AF control for quiet, accurate autofocus, while full-time manual focus remains available in AF mode. The f/1.2 aperture can also support faster shutter speeds in dim conditions, helping reduce motion blur without immediately pushing ISO higher.
There is no optical image stabilization, so stabilization depends on the camera body, gimbal, tripod or other support system. At approximately 590 g and only 65.5 mm long, the lens is relatively compact for such a large maximum aperture and works well on handheld rigs and compact EF-based camera builds.
Eight-element L-series optical design
Canon built the lens from 8 elements in 6 groups, including a large high-precision aspherical element made from high-refractive-index glass. The design is intended to control aberrations across the focusing range while preserving the characteristic shallow depth of field that defines this lens. An eight-blade circular diaphragm supports smooth background blur, and the body uses dust- and moisture-resistant construction for professional location work.
For creative use, shooting wide open emphasizes shallow focus and can give the image a gentler, more atmospheric rendering, while stopping down increases contrast and overall definition. That gives cinematographers and photographers a useful choice between a more expressive wide-open look and a cleaner result at smaller apertures.
